Our Economy

Posted By Kissa

Today’s economy is awful and sliding downward fast. All of us know this. We’re all trying to save a buck where ever and when ever we can. I’ve started posting freebies on my yahoo group almost daily. I sign up for them myself as well. I get free things in the mail just about every day and some days three or four items. Some say it isn’t worth it but hey, a buck is a buck and all that.  Here’s just a small variety of the things I’ve gotten:

  •  A free sippy cup for my grandson
  • All kinds of free medicines
  • cookbooks of every variety
  • Coupons for every type of cleaning item you could possibly use. I’m talking dollars off if not free.
  • Coupons for free food- Fridays, Arby’s, Quiznos, etc.
  • Glue- now who can’t use free glue?
  • A retirement guide
  • Food samples- everything from granola bars to a free 2-liter of Dr. Pepper
  • Diapers, wipes, baby spoon, etc.

I won’t go into the rest but let’s just say I get all sorts of neat and cool stuff. If it’s something I don’t use I still send off for it and then I give it away to someone who will use it.  Here’s some other ideas I’ve heard used recently to save money:

  1. Cooking and eating at home instead of out
  2. Carpooling
  3. Getting rid of satellite or cable and playing games with the family or reading together
  4. Gold parties- this is where woman bring their older gold jewelry and get money for it. I haven’t tried it myself but it’s popular where I live.
  5.  Consignment shops- buying and selling clothes, baby items, small household items, etc.
  6. Craig’s List- a lot of ‘toys’ are up for grabs right now for a very low price
  7. Ebay- another way to make a quick buck but not as cheap as Craig’s List which is free
  8. Competitive shopping- I’ve never seen grocery stores compete like they are right now. Sure some food prices are sky-rocketing but others are on sale and that’s when you buy in bulk if you can afford it.
  9. Pawn shops- their business is booming. People are selling and buying in these establishments.
  10. Extra or odd jobs
  11. Ebooks- lots of readers are finding that ebooks are not only cheaper but better for the environment

I’d love to know how you and your family are dealing with the economy crunch. Leave me a comment about your money-saving ideas….

*Cook and puree veggies or fruits, freeze in ice cube trays for individual servings for your baby

Love those tips, Apryl! Thanks for dropping by.

  3. What we did was cut everything. No cable, no home phone, we cut down our minutes on our cell phone, everything. Also, grocery budget gets cut, spending money. You name it! we did it!

Amethyst- sounds like you all are taking this seriously, good for you! We only use a cell phone to talk to people but BellSouth won’t let us have internet without having a home phone so we have one that we never use! I know there must be some way around that but I haven’t found it yet. Unfortunately they are the only DSL in my area.

Our spending money and ‘fun’ time out is almost non-existent now. But I will say that we are spending more family time at home together so that is a great side effect!

(And you know you can watch television on your computer right?)

  5. Since it’s tax time, people can check with their library. Mine gives free tax help to low income, low middle income and age 60 and over.

If you live close to the library and you don’t rely on your internet every second of the day, (like I do), then you caan cut that bill and use the library computers. My library even offers free wi-fi so you can take your own laptop.

That’s a great idea, Jasmine. I know a lot of food places have free Wifi now too.
